Performance Day!

December 7, 2013

I can't believe the day is finally here! I've so deeply enjoyed working with each of you, learning with each of you, and most of all getting to know each of you as wonderful people. I'm so amazed at the passion for life and learning that each person has shared with this project and I can't wait to see what comes next. Congratulations to the excellent performances, choreography, and lights last night at the composition showing.

Today is going to be wonderful. We've put together a fantastic production with a beginning, middle, and end and it rocks. Below is the schedule for the day, and a couple of notes on things to remember. Also, as many of our production team may not be able to be there for set up, I would be deeply grateful if any dancers might be interested/able to be there a little early at 3:00pm instead of 3:30pm to do the space set up.

Schedule for Performance Day:
3:00-3:30 Space Set-Up
  • All Production Team (tentative Gabe/Hillary/Phoebe; no Melanie or Austin)
3:30-3:45 Warm Up
3:45-3:55 Get in Costumes/Make-Up
3:55-4:00 Spaces
  • No Melanie or Hillary

5:30 Call Time
5:30-5:45 Warm Up #2
5:45-6:15 Costumes/Hair/Makeup
6:15 Places
6:30 Showtime #1
7:00 Talkback
7:45 Places
8:00 Showtime #2

9:30 Cast Party + Family!

A few things to remember...

Everyone:
The most important things for today are 1) have a significant amount of fun, 2) live each moment as fully as you possibly can, 3) do what you and love it, and 4) timelines :). This is your show and you are spectacular, therefore the show will be spectacular.

Dancers:
We'll have the chance to work on the ending ("Under Pressure") some after the run, but before we do it during dress rehearsal, please be sure to run through it a couple of times in your head to see if you can work out for yourselves where the kinks are and what you can do individually to smooth them out.

Please remember to bring all accessories (hairties, bowties, hairspray, makeup, jewelry, etc.) and anything else you may need. We'll have a food break at 5:00pm so everyone can have a bite of refreshment before the show.

Ian, we didn't have the chance to work on Rivendell together to go through a couple of facing changes that we made with the women several weeks ago and I think you're doing almost everything exactly spot on, but just check in with another dancer to make doubly sure.

Production Team:
Everything seems to be going wonderfully! A few notes on specific elements below...
Gabe, the videos look great. They look like they may be a little blurry on youtube. Is this due to the compression of the files?

Emily, lights are looking great. Before the show today, I'd like to ask for your help in setting up computers for Skype. Family members will be calling in to three computers at 6:00pm and 7:30pm that will be set up on risers in the back of the seating section. If you could make sure to pick up the calls and double check that family members can see as much of the performance space as possible, I would very much appreciate it. After that, at 6:15 and 7:45, if you could please send a PDF of the program to each family (I'll share the email addresses later), I would be very grateful as well.

Michelle, we're excited to see you at dress rehearsal at 4:00!

Foodies, please double check to make sure you have enough utensils and cups for both shows (92 of everything). You're doing great. Remember, you are the first sign of movement the audience sees as part of the show, so have fun, walk the walk and noodle the noodles! You're the start of the show!

Austin, if there's anything else that comes to mind regarding sound, keep us posted.

Alexandra, the sound is doing great. How are we on the volume for the intro and "Walk Don't Run"?

--

Thank you all for everything, your time, your commitment, your creativity, your excitement, and for simply being wonderful people. I can't wait to see you in a few short hours. If you have any questions between now and then, please don't hesitate to call anytime

Rehearsal #20/21

December 1 and 3, 2013

Welcome back from break! I hope everyone had a wonderful time, full of exactly what you needed to reboot for the las stretch of the semester. I'm excited to see those of you that I'll see today, today and everyone else on Thursday evening. Below I've included detailed notes on choreography, lights, and sound. Shannon, I'll send a separate note about programs later today.

If any of the information below is unclear, please feel free to contact me anytime. If you have questions about scheduling/when you should be where, please contact Alexandra.

Here's all the information!

Choreography Notes:
Video #1
5:33 – Instead of the shoulder drop happening at 5:33, it should happen at 5:35 (listen for beat)
5:50 – in the hands shaking on the belly, they should move downwards on your body.
5:58 – the head look should be over the shoulder at the person behind ou.
6:10 – be sure to avoid cutting corners in the walk around the circle
6:21 – try to aim for everyone to be in place to turn to the front by 6:21 so you have a couple of moments of wait before starting the finger phrase
6:23 – on the first two small kicks, we should all be looking forward
6:54 – take a small hair longer of settling/breathing before beginning the cable table phrase
6:55 – for all of cable table, try to think about staying in the circle
8:00 – cable pulls look great, let’s aim to walk in time with each other as we walk to get new pieces of table, roughly in the same rhythm as we did in cable phrase, so let’s be sure to keep an eye on each other.
9:00 – Ian, aim to have the pull of the cable from behind motivating each step forward on the cable. It takes a little while, but that’s okay. When you have excess cable, just wrap it around yourself in a comfortable and efficient way.
9:29 – wherever the plug heads are, wait until we’ve all arrived in a tangle before moving to plug them in, and when we begin plugging, aim to move the plug heads to the front of the clump so the audience can see what we’re doing.
9:40 – when we turn to walk out of the cable clump, walk briskly like Alex and Molly demonstrate in the video
10:27 – let’s try to remove this first handstand and just do the box pushing one
11:11 – Alex, aim to walk in time with Shannon
12:27 – if there might be a way to emphasize the sweeping feeling versus the clearing/cleaning out of the way feeling in the cable cleaning bit here, that would be great
17:12 – Ian and Angela, try to reduce the wait time between each jump by avoiding pausing at the turn in each running circle
17:24 – let’s aim to work on this one a couple of times
17:25 – Molly and Alex come in running here

We’ll work on Rivendell specifically to clarify timing in person so I won’t include it here.

Video #2
2:37 – Shannon and Hannah, try to aim to have this be where you stand up to take the cables around the outsides of the boxes. Begin walking in the awkward butt-out walks with the rest of the dancers once you’re up, and then into thoracic spine walks when the other dancers do too.
5:21 – cable holders, please make sure to hold enough tension in the cable to ensure that the cable winds up around Shannonand Angela’s hips (versus thighs)
5:40 – men hold arms out with cables so women can walk through them
5:41 – in general, men aim to walk with a brisk pace in time to the music and make the direction of each step clear.
6:18 – remember that we decided to melt into a goopy pile here
6:38 – I like that we all have different bows!

Lighting Notes:

Video #1:
13:01 – if there might be a way to light Hannah just with stage right sidelights, that would be fabulous
13:48 – then in this moment to open out to the more spacious lighting
15:46 – in the video, I’m not sure if this is a light change or not to more orangey, but if it is, I like it! If not, if it would be possible to go slightly more orangey here, that would be great
17:06 – it looks like there was a lighting change at 17:01, but if it could be shifted to 17:06 that would be great
18:29 – if this stage left sidelight could have no orange, that would be great
19:57 – if this light could now shift to the bluish hue you used before for the cable pulls, that would be great

Video #2:
1:00 – if the lights could now switch back to non bluish, that would be great
3:24 – surrounding lights dim somewhat and spots come on
15:17 – surrounding lights get somewhat brighter and spots dim
16:23 – lights dim to black out, 5 seconds black, lights up for bows

Sound Notes:
Video #1:
7:38 – I couldn’t quite hear the sound for this part in the video, so just a reminder that the industrial chugging sound should start here, even if it takes 30 seconds or so to warm up to full speed
12:45 – the moment Shannon sits down, if the chewing could cut out, that would be great
12:46 – Nocturne starts
18:24.5 – by the time the chewing sound you hear in the track ends, the chewing should cut out. Dancers will aim to listen for the end of that chew, at which point, the will turn and begin walking backwards.
18:48 – at this point in the choreography, if the Vangelis song could start, that would be great

Video #2:
00:49 – I think here, Vangelis should aim to cut out (men running)
1:00 – and here, the “Telephones and Rubberbands” song should come in
6:24 – or whenever the body pile melt is about to come to and end, sound begins to fade,  after 5 seconds it comes in again for bows.

Thank you so much and until soon! We're almost there and it looks amazing!

Thanksgiving Post

November 26, 2013

My deepest congratulations to everyone on what is shaping up to be an excellent show. I'm so proud and excited about what we've made together. I've included the video of our second run from Sunday so you can see where all of our hard work has led us (it's in two parts)!

Over break, please take the time to relax, enjoy some delicious food, allow your bodies to recover, and digest all the choreography, dancing, and production information your minds and bodies have been receiving.

For dancers and foodies before our next rehearsal, review choreography specifics a few times, but most of all allow yourselves to begin thinking about performing and what that means for you in the work. The piece belongs to you now!

For those who were unable to attend on Sunday (Gabe, we hope you're feeling better soon! Austin, the same for you and thank you so much for sending along the sound through DropBox! It was a huge help), it would be great to chat briefly by phone or Skype to touch base about any questions in the next few days.

You'll be receiving an email sometime this week/weekend with more details on choreography/lighting/sound, etc. once I've processed a bit more myself.

Thank you all so much and a happy, much deserved Thanksgiving! I'm deeply grateful to know and work with each of you.

Rehearsal #19

November 21, 2013

Many congratulations on an excellent rehearsal yesterday evening. I can't believe we've fully completed the piece choreoraphically and was so excited by all of the fascinating and creative thoughts from all production folks. I'm honored and amazed to work with each of you.

Below I've included a few notes to summarize my understanding of where we're at and where we'll aim to go on Sunday. Further below, there's some info/questions about a cast party. Please be sure to read through everything!

-
DANCERS
It feels great. I'm thrilled we were able to work through the entire piece and really practice the beginning chunk a few times. On Sunday, we'll aim to run the entire thing at least three times to get a feel for what it actually is and so that we can begin to feel comfortable performing it.

Between now and Sunday, if you could please go over for yourselves a few times the order of events, I would be very grateful.

Ian and Alex, would you maybe both be able to arrive a little early on Sunday to review your duet a couple of times,Alex for you to try on a couple new costume items, and Ian for you and I to rehearse our 5 jumps a couple of times?

-
PRODUCTION
General thoughts are that you are all wonderful. You may have heard Alexandra mention briefly to you last night that all of your work will be going into a portfolio of the entire thesis project that will have information about choreography, costumes, and all other production elements. As such, if you would each feel comfortable recording your final designs, scores, blocking, etc. as is relevant for your field in a document and submitting it to Alexandra and I by December 6th at midnight, I would be very grateful. If you have questions about specifics of the document/how to compile it, feel free to email or call me directly as format will be different for each field. Hopefully, recording all the information in document form will help for your own artist portfolios as well!

Foodies (Melanie and Phoebe)
Beautiful work. I'm very excited by your performance and how it's developing. Thank you also for working so hard to obtain the beautiful black forks despite the challenging circumstance! Would you both perhaps be available to meet with me on Sunday at 4:00pm for about 20 minutes to rehearse a few times and to develop your characters a little further?

Sound (Austin)
I'm amazed at your knowledge about sound and your creativity. Thank you for all your work. Can't wait to keep working through things on Sunday!

Light (Emily and Hillary)
Great ideas last night. I love the cue sheet as well. If you need any additional gels or information from Alexandra or I, please don't hesitate to be in touch anytime

Video (Gabe)
I love your thoughts. We can maybe test out whichever setup you had in mind on Sunday. Also, if you wouldn't mind sending me the name of your co-cameraperson, I would love to send it along to Shannon to add her to the program!

Photos (Michelle)
I'm excited to begin using your work on the Facebook page. Was the accreditation under the photo I used for my profile okay? Let me know whatever would be best for you. Can't wait to see you on Sunday!

Poster/Program (Shannon)
Beautiful work. Thank you so much. To recap, I believe we agreed that we'll put everybody's names in small print below their silly names if possible? Maybe if we could have a draft copy (black and white is fine) on Sunday to double check with everyone again, that would be great. Also, I'll send you the second cameraperson's name soon.

Rehearsal #17

Hi Again!

Here's the score with a couple of tweaks since yesterday. Ian, if you could please let me know when might be a good time to meet for 30 minutes/when you're feeling better before Thursday's rehearsal, that would be wonderful.

Here are all the video clips:
Shannon clearing: http://youtu.be/w0lVNMXCavw
Nocturne: video uploading

Please be sure to read through each of the 25 steps below and send along any questions, thoughts, concerns you may have. We can do it! I'm confident that we can get through at least number 24 on Thursday.

Here’s the plan…
1.  Eating noodles/conversation
2.  Phoebe/Melanie collect cups and everyone freezes in place while they collect audience cups
3.  Light cue – bellies expand
4.  “Walk Don’t Run” starts – bellies melt back to neutral
5.  Belly Phrase
6.  Cable Table
7.  “Die Luftseilbahn” starts at 2:50 – cable pull happens
8.  Cable entanglement
9.  Shannon clears the space with the introduction to her solo (up until opening door) that leads into walking in circles of increasing size until all cable and dancers have been cleared, all dancers move to their respective boxes (see below) by standing abruptly and thoracic-spine-walking to box
a.     AlexIan, Molly, and Angela end up on downstage left box sitting/leaning casually on box
b.     Hannah ends up standing of upstage right box
10. “Cereal Eating Munching Sound Effect” starts – Shannon does her solo
11. Shannon exists to downstage left box to sit with existing group
12. “Nocturne, Op. 72, No. 1” starts
a.     Hannah does her solo on the box
b.     Molly and Alex enter on Hannah’s cue
c.      Hannah walks in a straight line to downstage to do her solo again, grabs cable with toe and takes off through curtain
d.     Molly and Alex exit stage left
e.     Angela and Ian leave box and start duet – instead of just melting, do 6 throws and catches, then melt downstage right
f.      Shannon clears cable and sits on upstage left box
g.     Molly and Alex enter again to do some belly phrase work or part of duet and melt
13.    One chew from “Cereal Eating Munching Sound Effect” happens as Shannon stands up with hands on belly, all stand up with Shannon and Hannah enters from the gap in the curtain to put hands on belly
14.  “Cereal Eating Munching Sound Effect” continues - all walk backwards toward cable pile to do Rivendell, do enough steps to end up about 3 ft. away from cable pile
15. Rivendell falls start (x4)
16. All walk back toward cables until a foot touches and is able to scoop a cable onto itself
17. Rivendell falls repeat (x4)
18. Men drop out and crawl, women do Rivendell phrase continued
19. Women drop out and crawl
20. “Telephone and Rubberband” starts – men do duet
21. Shannon and Hannah untangle the cables
22. Molly and Angela enter from curtain upstage left
23. Molly, Angela, Alex, and Ian do belly phrase from where they are into walking in circle, walking gets quicker and more and more frantic in circle
24. Shannon and Hannah walk the cable ends around the outside edge of the blocks
This part will still be worked out together. We can do it!
25. “Under Pressure” – under pressure section starts

Thank you!!

Rehearsal #16

November 10, 2013

Thank you, dancers, for all of your excellent work. Below I've included a few thoughts on who each of our characters are in relation to each other. Please be sure to read through them for each of our 15 minute rehearsals, and I can't wait to work with you.

CharactersIan:Please see this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCk_22ZwKfA) from 8:30-8:48 and note the unexpected throwing/falling feeling by Angela. I think what I'm seeing developing in your character is a combination of that feeling + Lenny's boundless love.

Molly:I'm feeling a "sister-that-comes-home-with-knee-high-black-leather-boots-at-age-17" that is now around age 25 character developing. I'm kind of seeing the older version of this: http://images1.fanpop.com/images/photos/1700000/10-Things-I-Hate-About-You-julia-stiles-1780319-640-480.jpg or like this person: http://images1.fanpop.com/images/photos/1700000/10-Things-I-Hate-About-You-julia-stiles-1781128-640-480.jpg (Note they're the same person, but different feelings from the images.

Shannon:I'm definitely feeling a clearing, clean, relieving, sorting character developing. I liked what you worked on from Sunday, it's starting to find that feeling. Here's the video that you and Alexandra made: http://youtu.be/roJ0ZaYX2V0.

Alex:I notice a solid (in the physical sense)/rigid, fully of energy like this: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Farkyz.deviantart.com%2Fart%2FRunning-Sonic-203588118&h=0&w=0&sz=1&tbnid=SpJ4bIX0_fhL8M&tbnh=208&tbnw=243&zoom=1&docid=WXlyC0mWpJnHfM&ei=R6mBUrn5HY_gsASfoICACg&ved=0CAEQsCU or this: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fmlpchan.net%2Frp%2Fres%2F205869%2B50.html&h=0&w=0&sz=1&tbnid=Ok_rBCm9otNbJM&tbnh=192&tbnw=256&zoom=1&docid=ou8Ct1v7CTnzmM&ei=R6mBUrn5HY_gsASfoICACg&ved=0CAQQsCUbut at the same time, with the responsibility of an older brother.

Hannah:Interestingly, I'm seeing Bellatrix Lestrange. Not in an evil way, but in the same sort of shadowed physicality and estrangement from a family. An anonymous friend of mine has an aunt with whom he hasn't been in touch with for years because his father was the "bastard" child (or so he was called as the illegitimate son of a common mother) of the family. Recently they got to chatting again. I feel a similar experience developing for your character from beginning to end of the piece. Starting as a "bastard child" so to speak but through the years allowing age, distance, and forgetfulness to bring you back to the family again.

Thank you so much again for everything. You are all wonderful and if you have any questions about  character thoughts above, let me know!

Rehearsal #15

November 7, 2013

Thank you all for a wonderful performance and rehearsal yesterday evening and for being so prepared to handle new situations (like learning all of Hannah’s part just in case, finding a way to dance around an injury, awesome programs, and choreographic changes!). I am so proud of where we have come together. It was great to receive feedback. I so excited to build on some of the suggestions that our wonderful audience had and make our skeleton a full body. We’re going places and I can’t wait to go there with you!

The video from rehearsal is currently uploading here: http://youtu.be/5_sI9uZhJVAbut it looks like it’s taking a little while so maybe check back in an hour or so.

Thank you all again and I really can’t wait for Sunday.

Rehearsal #14

November 6, 2013

I’m very excited for the informal showing tomorrow evening. We have a nice 4-6 person audience of critical eyes, and perhaps a few additional guests from our production team.

I’m feeling great about the piece and am so pleased and privileged to work with such a wonderful cast. Thank you all for your hard work. If you have a couple minutes to arrive early and change into costume, I would very much appreciate it.

I have a few notes for tomorrow’s performance on the choreography/costuming, which I’ve included below, as well as the links to videos of almost all of the work we’ve done.

Choreography
Boxes Section:
1.     Looks great – keep thinking “gestural.”
2.     For walking section –
a.     On the first walks with the butt sticking out, it should take 2 sets of quick 8 counts (so 12345678, 12345678) – please be sure to keep this circle big and avoid cutting corners. This will probably mean larger steps once you get to the quick thoracic walks (think coming from the pelvis).
3.     On the pointy finger phrase –
a.     Folks on stage left, if you wouldn’t mind reviewing the reversed version a couple of times, I’d very much appreciate it. I know we didn’t get much time to spend on it.
4.     For walking section #2 –
a.     On the walks around the cables in a tight circle, think tight and fast. We should be able to get around the circle twice.
b.     I noticed we tend to sit down pretty close to the cables. When we sit down at the end, try to think of taking a step back with your derière.

Cable Table:
1.     Great as always.
2.     On the last cable pull, think true competition/”I’m going to get this cable if this is the last thing I do.” When you feel Hannah/kind-of Angela start to win, let them have it.

Trio/Solo/Duo Section:
1.     Alex and Molly – Great DNA strand pause.
2.     Hannah – Great expansive feeling. Maybe think even more backwards motion on the three backwards jumps toward stage left.
3.     Ian and Angela – Let’s make sure that after the crabby waddle bit we do our side arabesque and then just three steps up the cable before turning over our upstage shoulders to walk for three, serve a dish, walk for three, serve a dish, walk for three and jump
4.     Shannon – the movement is looking great. On this section if you might be able to think of that same cleaning feeling after you’ve dropped the cable, so sweeping, clearing, opening a door feelings, that would be wonderful. Same for the spider section at the end. If you might now be able to go back to the feeling of feet lunging and torso/arms sweeping up behind, that would be great as well.

Rivendell:
Ah, the problematic section. I had another moment as I seem to be prone to do, and came up with the following thoughts. We will definitely work on this tomorrow some before the showing. The piece of music I think we’ll use for the showing is “Classical Gas” by Mason Williams.
Order of Events –
1.     Post-Shannon
a.     All stand with hands on bellies as we did in the last run
b.     All take 7 steps back so we end on our left foot back
c.     All begin lunges – we will do four lunges all together. It will be important that we stay with each other in timing and positioning (so keeping that outwards expanding feel) and that they get progressively faster.
d.     On the fifth lunge, women continue with Rivendell phrase and men fall back down over right shoulder and inch toward each other, pulling with arms and legs sort of drag along behind.
e.     On completion of Rivendell, women fall over right shoulders and inch toward the cable pile, pulling with arms and legs sort of drag along behind. Men stand and Alex immediately falls into leading running circle.
f.      Shannon and Hannah unravel. It looks great. A couple of things –
                                               i.     Hannah – if you could maybe stay in place like you were before to allow the cable to wrap around your waist a bunch that would be great. Maybe stand on the box?
ii.     Hannah and Shannon – I think for the showing we won’t bring the boxes closer together. However, I really like it and would like to work on it on Sunday.
g.     Men’s duet – beautiful work. A few notes –
                                               i.     Ian – on first lift, think of almost running and tripping over Alex, which consequently leads your body to bend over him and slide off
ii.     Alex – on all the moments right before Ian throws himself at you, maybe think not of preparing to catch him, but happening to be there just at the right moment.
iii.     Ian and Alex – at each moment, think about why you are going where you are going? Why do you pause? Why do you keep moving? Decide for yourselves what you feel your intention is in each moment.
h.     Molly/Angela Duet does not take place. Instead…
i.      Everyone except for Shannon and Hannah does box belly phrase from the beginning from exactly where they are (Ian laying on ground, Alex sitting next to Ian in opening Cable Table section position, Molly and Angela from backstage so maybe bellies poke out through the opening in the curtain or we enter or something of the sort).
j.      End Section
This is where I think we’ll end the Rivendell section at the showing tomorrow. We’ll then immediately skip to Under Pressure once the cable has been unraveled.

Under Pressure
1.     Shannon and Angela
a.     I like what’s happening here. We’ll just keep playing with it.
2.     Cable section
a.     Wait for music to start before walking on.
b.     It’s interesting. I’m not quite sure what’s happening, but I think there’s something here to sort through and work with. We’ll keep solidifying what it is on Sunday, but for now just keep doing what we have.

Costumes
Underwear:
Molly and Hannah – please bring nude- or orange-colored undergarments if possible. If not, we’ll go for black
Shannon and Angela – please bring black undergarments if possible (sports bra/non-thong underwear – I’m curious about the blatantly visible look since it seems we won’t be able to avoid some kind of visibility)
Ian and Alex – please bring dance belts
Alex – please bring your khaki shorts

Hair:
Alex – as is
Ian – as is but combed
Molly – half-ponytail (I have some orange hair ties for your that Hillary has kindly shared)
Hannah – ponytail
Shannon – clean braid (I have some orange hair ties for you as well)
Angela – clean ponytail
